From
big-city excitement to sandy beaches to
back-road towns and farms, "the Midwest truly
is a microcosm of the entire nation," says
Kaercher, editor in chief of Midwest Living
magazine and author of Best of the Midwest:
Rediscovering America's Heartland. "The Midwest
is the nation's last travel frontier because of
all the overlooked surprises that await. Plus,
prices are very affordable, it's generally safe
and uncrowded, and Midwesterners are nothing if
not friendly and welcoming."
The
Midwestern United States, generally referred to
simply as the Midwest (also referred to as The
Heartland), is one of the four geographic
regions within the United States of America
that are officially recognized by the United
States Census Bureau. The region consists of
twelve states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,
Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North
Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin
Chicago is the largest city in the region,
followed by Detroit and Indianapolis.
Chicago-Naperville-Joliet is the largest
metropolitan statistical area, followed by
Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Minneapolis-St.
Paul-Bloomington, and Greater St. Louis. Sault
Ste. Marie is the oldest city in the region,
having been founded by French missionaries and
explorers in 1668.
